Norman Edgar
I was so sad to hear of Norman Edgar’s death on 8th July. He was an outstanding artist, and a wonderful teacher at St Columba’s High School, Gourock. His art department was a busy, creative sanctuary which for many offered respite from difficult home situations, lack of confidence and opportunities or from educational pressures.
Norman was an outspoken ambassador for young people from working class backgrounds and if they showed any interest in art or wanted to enjoy using materials, he encouraged them wholeheartedly to experiment and take risks. He encouraged discussions about literature, languages, politics and society. He was interested in everyone’s opinion and enjoyed an argument.
My art career was greatly influenced by him and the attention he paid not only to my Art School portfolio preparation but also through his encouragement and input to all my education.
Thankfully I met Norman again at various stages in my career and we would laugh, drink and share stories and gratitude for our lives. He was a truly inspirational man who’s influence will carry on through many people. His art, style, joy, passion and charisma will be so missed.
